Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are offering virtual storytimes until further notice. Check our calendar for dates and times.

Did you know that Storytime begins at birth? Ascension Parish Library offers a variety of storytimes for children from birth to the age of 5. All of our storytimes are fun, interactive, and engaging, and promote early literacy skills.

Babytime is for babies from birth to the age of 18 months. It’s an excellent chance for babies and caregivers to bond over books. Babytime is fast paced and energetic, and includes interactive board books and a variety of songs and fingerplays for babies and caregivers to enjoy together.

Toddler Storytime

Toddler Storytime is for active, adventurous, wiggly toddlers from 15 months old to age 2. We’ll entertain your toddler, and make learning fun, as you participate with them and soak up quality time together.

Preschool Storytime

Preschool Storytime is for children ages 3 - 5. These storytimes are an exciting half-hour of stories, songs, and active play. Children attend Preschool Storytime on their own, without their parents. This helps them prepare for attending preschool or kindergarten on their own and gives them a great sense of independence.

Bilingual Storytime

Children ages 7 and younger and their families are invited to take part in an exciting and interactive storytime that is presented entirely in English and Spanish. Enjoy thirty minutes of stories, songs, and active play, followed by a fun and easy craft.

Pajama Storytime

If you love hearing stories before bedtime, then put on your favorite jammies and join us at Pajama Storytime. We’ll sing fun songs, read great stories, and you’ll get to make a craft to take home.

    • Storytime is held for 8 weeks every spring, summer, and fall. Please check with your local Ascension Parish Library location for specific dates.

    • Babytime sessions last approximately 15 minutes. Toddler and Preschool Storytime sessions last approximately 25-30 minutes.

    • Please arrive early enough to sign in each week and to make a last minute trip to the restroom if necessary. Once Preschool Storytime begins, no children will be admitted. Please do not open or knock on the door, as frequent interruptions disturb the children.

    • Babytime is designed for children from birth to 18 months old. Toddler Storytime is designed for children ages 15 months to 2 years. Older and younger siblings are always welcome at Babytime and Toddler Storytime.

    • Children have different listening skills, depending on their stage of development and personality. Sometimes a noisy or active child causes so much disturbance that others cannot hear or focus. If your child doesn’t want to listen today, you can leave the room briefly and rejoin us when your child is ready.

    • When you sing along or do a finger rhyme, you are showing your child that what we are doing is not only fun, but also important.

    • Unfortunately, your chatting becomes a distraction for others. Please turn off your cell phone and have personal conversations after story time is over. Then you can hang out and visit wherever you are comfortable for as long as you want.

    • Preschool Storytime is for children ages 3-5 only.

    • By age 3, children want to start doing things on their own without the help of their parents and are more eager to interact with children their own age. By encouraging preschoolers to attend storytime on their own, the library is fostering the preschooler’s need for independence.

    • No. Preschool Storytime is only for children ages 3-5. If your child is not ready to go to Preschool Storytime on their own, they may attend Toddler Storytime until they are ready.

    • If your child gets noisy or disruptive during Preschool Storytime, the library staff will attempt to get your child to focus and listen to the stories. However, if after several attempts, a child continues to show that they are not ready for the Preschool Storytime experience, they will be taken out of the room and brought to the children’s section. Once a child is taken out of the room, they will not be able to re-enter the room. The library encourages you to bring your child back the following week to try again. Parents and guardians are asked to remain in the children’s section in case their children need them before the storytime session is over.

    • Yes! All Ascension Parish Library locations offer Pajama Storytime where children and their families are invited to attend in their pajamas for a fun evening of stories, songs, and a craft. Our Gonzales location also offers Bilingual Storytime for anyone interested in getting exposed to a new language. Stories and songs are presented in both English and Spanish. Both of these storytimes are designed for children ages 7 and younger and their families. Pajama and Bilingual storytimes last approximately 30 minutes, and both are followed by a simple craft. Please refer to our monthly newsletter for dates and times.
