Screen classic horror film monsters at our Summer Film Series.
Step into the shadows and exploe the monsters that made early movie magic. This series focuses on the characters that people still talk about today. Donald Beale, director of Online Distance Learning with LSU Online and Continuing Education, will meet weekly to discuss the themes and styles in these classic films.
June 4: Dracula (1931, m75)
In this classic vampiric horror film, directed by Tod Browning and starring Bela Lugosi, an unfortunate solicitor, Renfield, travels to meet Count Dracula. Unbeknownst to Renfield, Count Dracula is a vampire, who quickly condemns Renfield to the same fate. When the two travel back to London, Count Dracula preys upon victims throughout the city, including a young woman named Mina. This critically acclaimed film led to countless spin-offs and sequels, cementing the character’s place as a cultural icon. The film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2000. This film is rated TV-14.
June 11: The Invisible Man (1933, m71)
Directed by James Whale and starring Gloria Stuart and Claude Rains, this film follows Dr. Jack Griffin, a mysterious man covered in bandages. Following an experiment that left him completely invisible, he travels to a village and demands that the townspeople leave him alone. As more of the villagers discover he is invisible, chaos and crime ensue. This film was an immediate success for Universal, and it is a beloved classic in the genre to this day. This film is rated TV-PG.
June 18: Frankenstein (1931, m71)
Directed by James Whale and starring Boris Karloff, this film centers on Dr. Frankenstein, a mad scientist who is obsessed with creating life from the deceased. The creature that results from these experiments, Frankenstein’s monster, escapes from the lab and encounters residents of the surrounding town, causing destruction and despair. This film is rated TV-PG.
June 25: The Bride of Frankenstein (1935, m75)
In director James Whale’s masterful sequel to the 1931 classic, Dr. Frankenstein is persuaded to create a mate for his creature to help fabricate a new race, but all doesn't go as planned. Boris Karloff returns as Frankenstein’s monster and actress Elsa Lanchester plays dual roles as novelist Mary Shelley and the frightful fright-wig-wearing bride. This film is rated TV-PG.
